Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on Monday introduced its next-generation microchip, codenamed Barcelona, in its long-awaited bid to regain ground lost to larger rival Intel Corp.
AMD's customers such as Dell Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Sun Microsystems Inc. are already shipping computer systems using the AMD Barcelona chip and the chipmaker has already booked revenue from the new semiconductor.
Intel, AMD's rival, has regained ground it lost to its smaller rival in the last two years as it introduced its own new chips with what it calls a quad-core design, a chip that has four central processing engines.
"The stakes here are for AMD to staunch the erosion in its marketshare and to once again go on the offensive against Intel," said Insight 64 analyst Nathan Brookwood. "That's the biggest thing."
Intel recently launched its own high-end server processors, but those were only speeded-up versions, Brookwood said, adding that Intel's own chips -- codenamed Nehala -- using a similar design to AMD's will not be available until a year from now.
The Opteron chip is up to 70 percent faster than its previous chips while using the same amount of power. Also, the chip is aimed at the market for servers, where AMD has in the past few years fared well against Intel.
I should have known that Britney Spears' big Video Music Awards performance would have been uncomfortable to watch the moment it opened, with that closeup of the weave tracks in the back of her head (seriously, MTV camera folks, didja think that was a flattering angle?). But I wasn't quite prepared for the awkward mess in store, as Britney gallumphed around like a zombie while lip-synching to her new single, "Gimme More."
I was really rooting for Britney to be awesome and get the show off on the right foot. And by all rights, she should have rocked -- "Gimme More" has been received amazingly well (it's no "Toxic," but admit it, it's better than you expected) -- and we have all those fond memories of Brit Brit from VMAs past (with the python, with Madonna and Xtina). But instead of watching a sexy, exciting performance -- a resounding statement that yes, she IS Britney, bitch -- I saw a tentative, confused-looking girl who could barely muster the energy to mouth along with the backing track, let alone work those stilleto boots. Britney, if you're gonna lip-synch, at least be entertaining!
PopWatchers, am I being too harsh?
Hurricane Felix was the sixth named storm, second hurricane, and second Category 5 hurricane of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season. Forming from a tropical wave on August 31, it passed through the southern Windward Islands on September 1 before strengthening to attain hurricane status. A day later on September 2, Felix rapidly strengthened into a major hurricane, and early on September 3 it was upgraded to Category 5 status; by 2100 UTC on September 3 the hurricane was downgraded to Category 4 status, but was re-upgraded by 1040 UTC to a Category 5 hurricane. Felix made landfall just south of the border between Nicaragua and Honduras in a region historically known as the Mosquito Coast.
Storm history
A tropical wave moved off the coast of Africa on August 24, tracking westward at around 14 mph (23 km/h) with no associated deep convection and a weak low-level inverted-V curvature.[1] Initially difficult to locate on satellites,[2] the wave axis tracked through a moist environment[3] and developed an area of scattered thunderstorms. By August 25 visible satellite imagery indicated broad cyclonic turning just north of the Intertropical Convergence Zone.[4] The wave continued to develop moderate to strong convection, and on August 27 a 1012 mbar low pressure area developed about 830 miles (1,340 km) west-southwest of Praia, Cape Verde.[5] For the next several days the system failed to organize significantly;[6] however, on August 30 the wave became better defined with more representation of the cyclonic turning into the low.[7] Convection increased early the next day,[8] and a Hurricane Hunters flight into the system reported the presence of a closed low-level circulation; accordingly, the National Hurricane Center initiated advisories on Tropical Depression Six at 2100 UTC on August 31 while it was located about 180 miles (295 km) east-southeast of the southern Windward Islands.[9]
Upon becoming a tropical cyclone, the depression was located to the south of a strong ridge, resulting in a west-northwest motion. The system maintained curved rainbands with expanding outflow, and with light wind shear and warm water temperatures the environment favored further development.[9] Its deep convection consolidated very near the center, and shortly after passing over the island of Grenada the depression intensified into Tropical Storm Felix early at around 0900 UTC on September 1.[10] Felix quickly strengthened as it developed a small inner core of convection with tightly-wound bands around the center,[11] and by late on September 1 an eye feature was observed on satellite imagery.[12] Based on reports from reconnaissance aircraft, the National Hurricane Center estimated that Felix attained hurricane status by early on September 2 while located about 155 miles (250 km) east-northeast of Bonaire.[13]
Hurricane Felix in the Eastern Carribean
Tracking through an area of extremely low wind shear and increasingly high oceanic heat content, Hurricane Felix quickly developed a well-defined eye, a symmetric cloud structure, and strong upper-level outflow.[14] Felix was upgraded to major hurricane status at around 1800 UTC on September 2 while located about 490 miles (790 km) southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.[15] Rapid strengthening continued, and later that day the hurricane attained Category 4 status on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale with the pressure dropping to 957 mbar; this corresponded to a falling rate of 3.4 mbar per hour, which the National Hurricane Center remarked as "one of the more rapid deepening rates we have observed." A Hurricane Hunters flight reported a stadium effect in the eye, and also reported the eye diameter shrank to 14 miles (22 km).[16] A subsequent Hurricane Hunters flight experienced flight level winds of 175 mph (280 km/h), with peak surface winds of 163 mph (263 km/h) reported in the southwest quadrant of the eyewall; surface winds of up to 189 mph (306 km/h) were found in its northeastern quadrant, although the National Hurricane Center reported the peak reading could have been contaminated due to graupel in the clouds. Based on the observations, it is estimated Felix attained winds of 165 mph (265 km/h) by 0000 UTC on September 3 while located about 390 miles (625 km) southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, making Felix a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. While investigating the hurricane, Hurricane Hunters encountered extreme turbulence and potentially dangerous graupel, which forced the flight to abort the mission.
Continuing quickly westward, the eye of Felix diameter decreased to 12 miles (19 km), and the National Hurricane Center estimates the hurricane attained a minimum central pressure of 929 mbar about nine hours after it reached Category 5 status. Initially, Felix was predicted to track west-northwestward, striking Belize before crossing the Yucatán Peninsula;[18] however, its path remained nearly due westward. Subsequently, cloud tops near the center began to warm as the eye became less distinct,[19] and by 1800 UTC on September 3 Felix weakened to Category 4 status with winds of 145 mph (235 km/h).[20] On September 4, Felix had completed an eyewall replacement cycle and began strengthening again during the day.[21] Felix was upgraded to a Category 5 for the second time at 1040 UTC,[22] and made landfall in extreme north-eastern Nicaragua shortly thereafter with winds of 160 mph (260 km/h).
Current storm information
The last tropical advisory has been issued on Felix, but heavy rainfall is still predicted from the remnant low.
Rainfall amounts of 8 to 15 inches (200 to 375 mm) are expected over much of Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador, with isolated amounts of up to 25 inches (625 mm) over mountainous terrain.
Preparations
Upon Felix's becoming a tropical cyclone, a tropical storm warning was issued for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tobago, and Grenada and its dependencies; a tropical storm watch was also issued for the northeastern Venezuela coast from Cumaná to Pedernales, including Isla Margarita, as well as the ABC islands.[24] The National Emergency Management Agency of Tobago was fully activated, with 79 shelters opened on the island.[25] Coinciding with the upgrade of Felix to tropical storm status, the watch for the ABC islands was upgraded to a tropical storm warning.[26] A hurricane watch was added to the islands early on September 2,[27] where several tourists attempted to leave by plane prior to the arrival of the storm.[28] Early on September 2, the government of Jamaica issued a tropical storm watch for the island,[13] which was canceled as the hurricane passed far to its south.[20] Later on September 2, a tropical storm watch was issued for Grand Cayman.[29]
At 0300 UTC on September 3, the government of Honduras issued a hurricane watch from El Limón to the Honduras/Nicaragua border,[30] which was upgraded to a hurricane warning six hours later; at the same time, a hurricane watch was extended westward to the Honduras/Guatemala border.[31] Officials ordered evacuations for citizens in low-lying areas near the coastline; by midday on September 3, around 300 tourists evacuated from the Bay Islands department, with an additional 400 preparing to leave by plane;[32] a total of 2,000 people were evacuated from coastal areas.[33] At 1500 UTC the government of Nicaragua issued a hurricane warning from Puerto Cabezas northward to the national border.[34]
A hurricane watch was issued for the Caribbean coast of Guatemala and the entire coastline of Belize at 1200 UTC on September 3 .[35]
Impact
Caribbean
At around 1200 UTC on September 1 a wind gust of 46 mph (74 km/h) was recorded on Barbados, and around the same time a gust of 44 mph (71 km/h) was observed in Saint Vincent.[36] The storm produced heavy rainfall across the Windward Islands. On Trinidad, heavy precipitation caused mudslides and overflown rivers which destroyed some bridges; moderate winds damaged several buildings on the island. Damage on neighboring Tobago was concentrated on its northern portion, where several mudslides resulted from rainfall;[37] monetary damage on Tobago was estimated at $250,000 (2007 TTD, $40,000 2007 USD).[38] Felix produced gusty winds on Grenada, which downed several power lines and destroyed the roofs of two houses; rough waves also broke several vessels from their anchors.[28] In St. Lucia, winds from the storm damaged the roof of a store in Castries, which collapsed and destroyed 12 vehicles.[37]
In the ABC islands, the passage of the hurricane resulted in gusty winds and heavy rainfall. However, little damage was reported in Bonaire; the precipitation has left several homes submerged under water in Curaçao. In Aruba, the winds damaged one house and briefly left a northern village without power.[32] Hurricane Felix produced strong winds and 10 foot (3 m) waves along the north coast of Venezuela, which left one person missing in Puerto Cabello.[39]
Central America
Early reports suggest severe damage in Honduras and Nicaragua after Felix made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane. In Puerto Cabezas, nearly every structure sustained at least roof damage, and many buildings were destroyed.[40]
Five people have been reported dead - four in Nicaragua (all in Puerto Cabezas
[41]) and one in Honduras (by a motor vehicle accident caused by heavy rain and landslides). However, at least 150 others are missing at sea and communications are difficult to impossible in many areas
A Langur tackles
the monkey menace at a railway workshop near Vijayawada

waiting for work: Common Langurs kept for sale at Vissannapet in Krishna district.
VIJAYAWADA: The Railways have hired a monkey to keep troops of other monkeys out of its wagon workshop at Guntupalli near here.
Only a monkey, it would seem, can check its ilk. Putting a Common Langur (Presbytis entellus) in charge seems to have become the most cost-effective way of checking groups of the more common Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mul atta) from indulging in vandalism.
About 60 Rhesus monkeys used to attack the workers at the railway workshop. These monkeys were stopped in their tracks after the langur was pressed into service.
Families in the upland areas of Krishna district, meanwhile, see langurs as a god-sent. They catch langurs and sell them to those who want to keep the Rhesus monkeys at bay.
Some primates are fiercely territorial. They defend the resource area they exploit, usually by means of an exchange of visual or vocal signals by adult males. Chasing is rare, and when it occurs, it is mostly a ‘ritual.’ This is the principle involved in the strategy employed by the Railways.
Payal, a langur that guarded Parliament House from bands of Rhesus monkeys, was in the news earlier. In fact, the Delhi Government recruited langurs to protect four of its premises.
But is it legal to keep a langur in captivity? The minimum punishment for capturing and selling one is three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs.10,000.
The Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 does not permit them being kept in captivity. Even a zoo should not acquire, sell or transfer them without prior permission.
Yet they are often sold like pets. Earlier, forest officials themselves would recommend the use of langurs to control Rhesus Macaques, but of late there has been a change in attitude. A racket of langur trafficking was busted in Krishna district recently.
A.V. Joseph, Andhra Pradesh’s Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), said action would be taken against animal traffickers under the Act. The Common Langur and the Rhesus Macaque are listed in Part I of Schedule II of the Wildlife Act. Section 9 of the Act, which deals with prohibition of hunting, says: “No person shall hunt any wild animal specified in Schedule I, II, III and IV.” The Act defines the word “hunting,” not only as killing but, “capturing, poisoning, snaring, and trapping.”
Our artist was born in January 15th,1961 in Havana, Cuba. He began his interest in music in his mid-teens. His first performance was before a live audience back in 1978 while still in High School in Chicago, IL. It was the High School's First Annual Talent Show where he performed live on stage the song "Teddy Bear" by Elvis Presley. After receiving a standing ovation for his performance, "The bug", as they call it in music business began in his life.
In 1979 he moved to Miami, Florida where he pursued the entertainment industry but ran into a few hard walls and was forced to put his music talents aside. In 1981 he decided to try his luck at an acting career so he enrolled in Miami-Dade Community College and began to study acting with the "New World Center Stage Players". He performed in such plays as "The Young Veterans", "Portrait of a Madonna" and the musical "See Saw". He also had some small parts in such movies as "Absence of Malice" and "Blood Money". He later worked with Philip Burton a teacher, writer and actor on the production "An Interpretation of MacBeth", performing the sound effects, which was a complete success.
In 1982 he moved to Houston, Texas where he wrote most of his musical lyrics, poetry and short stories.
In 1992 Mannyman recorded his first single "Forever". It was released on Hollywood Artist Record Label and was performed by Stephanie Allen. The single did quite well and the royalty checks began to roll in. Then sales began to slow down and he found himself in debt. He returned to work on regular low paying jobs, mostly warehouse work and delivering of goods. His music career was once again taking the backseat.
In the Winter of 1994 he enrolled in the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale with interest in Music and in the Visual Arts. He began his classes in The Music and Video Business program offered by the college.
In June of 1994 he won an award for Best Electronic Recording for one of his singles named "Men at work". It was an experimental piece but an affective one. In March of 1995 he won another award for Outstanding Special effects on a 4 minute short story presentation which he helped write, produce, star and, shoot with other fellow students.
He released another single called "Blue Skies" sang by Charles Clark, on Hollywood Artist Record Label as part of a compilation with other artists but this album was a total flop.
In 1998 he began to experiment more with electronic music sounds and the PC quickly became his best friend. Suddenly there was no need for him to pay for long expensive hours of recording time in the studios and finally had full control over his music.
In 2000 his first CD, "Open Your Mind to the New Millenium" Vol. 1, was released exclusively on Mp3.com. It was a fresh alternative to what the market offered and the single "Open Your Mind #1 Club Remix" was a success and much praise was given to it.He also released "Open Your Mind to the New Millenium" Vol.2 shortly thereafter. In 2001 “High Radio Frequency” was released on Mp3.com and singles like "Off the Chain", "Mannyfestation", "ElectroKiss", "Carpediem Speedway", "Broken Dreams" and, “Caution System Error" were all hits. Later that same year he released his first Latin CD named "Soy Latino".
The CD included such success singles like "Peach Fuzzzzzz", "Synthethnico", "Baila Africana Mia", "Zambo", "Ficha De Domino" and, "Fidelidad sin Fidel".
In late 2002 his sixth CD, "Amicus Deo Favente", was released on Mp3.com and had tremendous success with the songs "1 Bit", "Rus in Urbe", "Teri", "Neuron", "Tequila Mix", "Promethium", "Jawbone", "Inaeternum", "Mindshaker", "1 Hour from now", "Lost Souls" and, "Dragon's Tail", all topping the charts. He has had 38 top 40 singles on MP3.com charts; 14 top 10 singles and 4 #1 singles. "1 Bit" has aired on local radio stations throughout the state of Fl and has been featured along with other songs from the "Amicus Deo Favente" and the "High Radio Frequency Energy" CDs in "Rhinoceros", a comic farce, which warns everyone against all forms of blind conformity. The play was performed at BCC Central Campus in Davie on March 13th, 2003 presented by its Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
In 2006 after a four year span he released "Inside The Box" with such hits as "the Kick" "inside the box" "Fire and Ice" "Circle of Love and Hate","Chase it" "Hop on the metro" and others...He also in the same year wrote the score for the Movie called "Bad Spirits" with hit's like "Left Behind,"The Visitor" "Black Widow's kiss" "Undisputed Elements" "Sacagawea" Spirits of the Dead" and others. The movie is presently in distribution agreements.
Mannyman is presently working on theme songs for many new upcoming television programs that will begin airing in the U.S and overseas and on his next CD surrounded by his computer and musical equipment, extending his musical talents in the realm of cyberspace where the future of music will be.
New Delhi: Is there life beyond cricket in India? Can the footballers, especially after their Nehru Cup win, become brand ambassadors in the future and can they displace the cricketers from their heady pedestal.
Well if the figures are taken into account footballers lag the cricketers by a long shot.
In cricket-crazy India it not often that one sees a footballer at a promotional event. But after a historic win on Tuesday, Indian footballer Renedy Singh was at a Reebok store in New Delhi for a promotional campaign.
Reebok is the same company that holds the endorsement reigns of many cricketers.
"When it comes to soccer, we have three clubs of which we are the official sponsors. We have Mohan Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting. When it comes to cricket we have 10 players who are in the Indian team. That is a lot I believe," says Reebok's Saurabh Agarwal.
When the Indian football team was celebrating the Nehru Cup win, cricketer Virender Sehwag was in the stands.
The Beautiful Game may be as exciting as the Gentleman's Game but not certainly rewarding enough
The divide is clear and the numbers say it all.
While an Indian international cricketer earns in Rs 1- 3 lakh as match fee, for a contracted footballer the amount is virtually nil.
An Indian cricket player also earns about Rs 2-3 crore per year from the game but in case of an Indian footballer is about Rs 10-15 lakh apart from the bonuses that they get per tournament.
Big guns in Indian cricket earn about Rs 30 crore a year just from endorsements but the big names on the football field manage just Rs 35 to 40 lakh.
Even at national level Ranji players will now take back about Rs 60 lakh a year while playing for clubs a footballer like Baichung Bhutia earns about Rs 40 to 45 lakhs.
"Would you want a cricketer or a footballer to endorse your product and why? For people to follow a game they have to win. Not once but at least 50 per cent of the times which the cricket team has done. They have lost badly but also won many matches. At least it is 50-50," Ad guru Prahlad Kakkar says.
The fans can only hope that the Nehru Cup win ushers a new dawn and much more rewarding era for football in India.
Abdullah Gül (born October 29, 1950) is the 11th President of the Republic of Turkey. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's selection of Gül as a presidential candidate drew strong and highly vocal opposition from ardent supporters of secularism in Turkey.
In May 2007, Gül's first bid for presidency was blocked by the Constitutional court in a climate of secularist concern regarding views Gül had expressed during his Welfare Party years, and the fact that his wife wears a hijab, a headscarf, seen by some as a symbol of political Islam.[1] However, following the parliamentary elections in July the same year, which were, like in 2002, won by the AKP, he was eventually voted in as Turkey's 11th president on August 28, 2007.
Early life
Born in Kayseri to Ahmet Hamdi, a mechanic, and Adeviye, his mother, Gül was brought up in a conservative family environment. His family has served in Güllük Camii in Kayseri for about one hundred years.[2]
Education
Gül studied economics at the University of Istanbul and wrote his dissertation there. During his graduate education, he studied for two years in London and Exeter. He pursued an academic career after that and worked at the higher education facilities in Adapazarı, collaborating in the establishment of a department for industrial engineering and teaching management courses of future Sakarya University. Between 1983 and 1991, he worked at the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). In 1991, Gül became a lecturer in international management.
First steps in politics
Gül became acquainted with right-wing politics early during his high school years. During his university education, he became a member of Islamist-nationalist Millî Türk Talebe Birliği (National Turkish Students' Union) in the line of Necip Fazıl's Büyük Doğu (Grand Orient) current.[citation needed]
He was elected a member of the Turkish parliament for Refah Partisi (RP, "the Welfare Party") from Kayseri Province in 1991 and 1995. During these years, he made statements about the political system of Turkey that was designed by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the Turkish National Movement. These statements caused controversy when his candidacy for the 2007 presidential election was announced by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan.[3]
In 1999, he kept his seat as a member of Fazilet Partisi (FP, "the Virtue Party"), successor to Refah Partisi. He was among the founders of Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi ((AKP), "Justice and Development Party). He was elected once again to represent Kayseri, in 2002, and in November 2002 was appointed Prime Minister, as AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan was unable to assume the role due to a ban on his participation in politics.
Prime Minister and Foreign Minister
After becoming foreign minister in March 2003 Gül has become the key player in Turkey's attempts to receive an accession date for the European Union and in its attempts to improve relations with Syria and maintaining its relationship with the Turkic-speaking countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus. On February 6, 2007, Gül flew to the United States to meet with U.S. President George W. Bush and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Presidential candidacy
Prime Minister Erdoğan announced on April 24, 2007 that Gül would be the Justice and Development Party candidate in the 2007 presidential election. Previously, there had been speculation that Erdoğan himself would be the party's candidate, which had provoked substantial opposition from secularists.[4][5] When a boycott of opposition parties in Parliament deadlocked the election process, Gül formally withdrew his candidacy on May 6, 2007.
But a few days later, on May 11 when inquired after the alterations to the Turkish constitution which now allowed the people to elect the president directly rather than a parliamentary vote, Gül announced that he was still intending to run on May 6.[6][7]
Following the July 2007 parliamentary election, the AKP renominated Gül as its presidential candidate on August 13; the election was again held as a vote of parliament.[8] On August 14, Gül submitted his candidacy application to parliament and expressed his commitment to secularism at a news conference.[9]
On August 28, 2007, he was elected president in the third round of voting; in the first two rounds, a two-thirds majority of MPs had been required, but in the third round he needed only a simple majority. Gül was sworn in immediately thereafter.[10] The process was a very low-key affair indeed: Gül's swearing-in was not attended by the Chief of the Turkish General Staff and was boycotted by the opposition Republican People's Party; then the hand-over of power at the presidential palace was held behind closed doors. Gül's wife, the head-scarfed Hayrünnisa, was nowhere to be seen.
Gül received messages of congratulation from the US, EU and German authorities while Turkish prime minister Tayyip Erdoğan made a statement saying "a structure doomed to uncertainty has been overcome" (an oblique reference to the deep state theory that Turkey is ruled behind-closed-doors by a secret conspiracy of soldiers and bureacrats).
Personal life
On August 20, 1980, Abdullah Gül married Hayrünnisa Özyurt (b. 1965), his first cousin, when she was 16 years old.[11] The couple has three children, two sons named Mehmet Emre and Ahmet Münir and a daughter named Kübra. He is a dedicated fan of the football club Beşiktaş J.K..[12]

The 2007 Midwest flooding was a major flooding event that occurred in the Midwestern United States in the third week of August 2007. While Hurricane Dean was affecting the Yucatan Peninsula and the Gulf of Mexico, a persistent storm system hung over the Midwest for several days, causing repeated flash flooding in the U.S. states of Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Cool Canadian air clashed with large quantities of warm moist air from the gulf, producing torrential rains along a stationary front. Twenty-six deaths across the central United States have been attributed to the resulting flooding, including several in Oklahoma and Texas in unrelated flooding as a result of Tropical Storm Erin.[1][2]
Meteorological synopsis
On Saturday August 18 a warm front pushed northward into Iowa and Illinois, where it became stationary. Warm, moist air pushing over the front provided the necessary moisture to fuel showers and thunderstorms, which moved in a west to east training fashion. Some parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa saw moderate to heavy rain for nearly a full day before the activity finally cleared out. Additional thunderstorms formed over these areas on Sunday August 19, exacerbating the flooding problems.[3] Though the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin did not directly impact these areas, moisture from Erin streamed northward, enhancing the thunderstorm activity.[4]
The stationary front and associated energy then extended eastward through Illinois, Indiana and Ohio on August 19 and August 20. Similarly, the front was the focus for thunderstorm development, and the precipitation continued moving over the same areas, leading to extended periods of heavy rainfall. As of August 25, flood watches remain in effect from Iowa to Ohio.[5]
Runoff from the heavy rain is causing river flooding to the south of the affected areas. The Mississippi River in Missouri and Illinois is expected to rise up to 5 feet (1.5 m) above flood stage, peaking sometime during Labor Day weekend.[6]
Minnesota
A large swath of heavy rain fell across most of southern Minnesota during Saturday August 18 and Sunday August 19, with the highest totals in the far southeast counties of the state. Twenty-four hour rainfall totals of 15.10 inches (384 mm) were recorded in Hokah, which easily broke the old state record of 10.84 inches (275 mm) for a twenty-four hour period. An unofficial twenty-four hour total of over 17 inches (432 mm) was recorded near Caledonia. During the entire weekend rainfall event, parts or all of 28 counties in Minnesota received at least 4 inches (102 mm) of rain. The highest total for the entire event was 18.17 inches (462 mm) near La Crescent.[7]
The heavy rains, aided by the rolling hills of southeast Minnesota caused several flash floods. The towns of Stockton, Houston, Elba and portions of Winona, on the Mississippi River, were evacuated. Citizens were evacuated to St. Mary's College in Winona, Lewiston and Caledonia, Minnesota. Governor Tim Pawlenty ordered 240 National Guard soldiers to help and declared a state of emergency in six counties. The Minnesota Army National Guard soldiers guarded communities that were cleared out after the flooding early August 19. The Army Corps of Engineers opened up the floodgates on the rising Root River to release some of the water creating pressure on the dike in Houston.[8] State Senator Sharon Erickson Ropes stated after initial flooding, "This is the worst disaster that's hit southeast Minnesota in a lifetime." [9] Four thousand two hundred homes were damaged or destroyed in the state, and seven deaths have been reported.[2] Fillmore, Houston and Winona counties were declared federal disaster areas, and Olmsted, Steele and Wabasha counties have become eligible for federal assistance.[10]
High flood waters on the Middle Branch of the Whitewater River, which runs through Whitewater State Park destroyed three bridges and damaged campgrounds, bathhouses, a group dining hall, and water and sewer systems in the park. About 500 campers were staying in Whitewater State Park at the time.[11] The park was closed to the public on August 20, 2007 for an indefinite period of time.[12] E. coli bacteria was found in the Rushford's water supply and residents were urged not to use it until the city's water system could be flushed.[13]
Amtrak train service between Minneapolis and Chicago, Illinois was shut down for a week because of damage to the tracks. Passengers were bussed between the two until repairs could be made.[14] Initial assessments put total flood related damages for Minnesota in excess of $26 million.[13]
Wisconsin
In Wisconsin, Governor Jim Doyle declared a state of emergency on August 20 in three counties in the southwest corner of his state after weekend rain dropped 10–12 inches (254–305 mm).[15] More than 200 homes were flooded in the Crawford County communities of Gays Mills and Soldiers Grove, each with about 600 to 640 residents. A mudslide pushed one house onto state Highway 35 in Vernon County.[16] Approximately $48 million in damages were reported in 12 Wisconsin counties.[17]
In Madison a mother and daughter waiting for a Madison Metro bus were electrocuted when lightning struck a power line and caused it to fall onto a flooded street in which they were standing, while another child was injured. A passenger on the bus was killed, and the driver was injured, both having been shocked after coming out of the bus to help.[18]
Prior to this torrential rain and flooding event, much of the state was in a moderate to severe drought that had persisted until mid-August. Although the southern half of the state received abundant precipitation, an upper-level high pressure ridge centered in Quebec caused a cut-off of precipitation to the north, leaving much of northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan with continued drought conditions.[19]
Ohio
The Blanchard River was 7.5 feet (2 m) above flood level in Findlay, the highest since 1913, while Bucyrus received 9 inches (229 mm) of rain. Inmates were moved from a Hancock County jail and several hundred others were evacuated from their homes in Crawford County.[2] A 92-year-old man drowned trying to get to safety after his car became trapped in floodwater near Findlay. [20] The river also reached to 8.7 feet (3 m) above flood level in Ottawa, Ohio.[21]
Oklahoma
Several cities including El Reno and Kingfisher experienced devastating floods, with Kingfisher being particularly hard hit. Much of Kingfisher was underwater for several days, and major damage was caused to homes and businesses.[citation needed] Three people were killed, when their vehicle was swept from the road near Carnegie.[citation needed] The remnants of tropical storm Erin remained very powerful and gained strength as it crossed over west-central Oklahoma. It was described by some weathercasters as an "Inland Hurricane", with a defined eye-wall, and dumping massive amounts of rain on the central part of the state, and is tracked east.[22][23][24]
Iowa
The Des Moines River near Fort Dodge crested at 4 feet (1.2 m) above flood stage necessitating the evacuation of three subdivisions.[2] In Ottumwa, storm sewers backed up into the city's water treatment plant, shutting four pumps down and leaving the entire town without adequate drinking water.[25] This was caused by heavy rainfall of over 12 inches (304.8 mm) that fell in southeast Iowa during the night of August 23 - August 24.[26]
Illinois
The city of Rockford, Illinois was deluged in the weeks preceding the major flooding during the third week of August. On August 7, 2007, Rockford was hit by between 5–7 inches (127–178 mm) of rain. Many streets, including main thoroughfares, were flooded. There was also fear that the Alpine Dam might break.[27][28] The following day, Governor Rod Blagojevich declared both Rockford and Winnebago County a state disaster area. With this declaration, he dispatched both the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to assist the city. Debris removal, law enforcement, damage assessment, and other duties were offered by the governor.[28]
The Rock River poured into this riverside park in Byron, Illinois on
August 24 and 25.
About two weeks later, following quick, violent storms on August 23, Governor Rod Blagojevich declared McHenry, Lake, Cook and Kane counties disaster areas. Though not affected by flooding as it was on August 7, the city of Rockford received 1.23 inches (31 mm) of rain setting an all time record for Rockford's wettest month in recorded climate data history with 13.82 inches (351 mm) of rain.[29] The storm shut down airports (including O'Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport), uprooted trees and left over 300,000 residents in northern Illinois without power, some for several days.[30] It also caused flooding on streets and major expressways. Wind gusts registered as high as 80 miles per hour (130 km/h) in the area, with the high being reported in Manhattan.[31] Rainfall totals in Boone and LaSalle Counties topped 1987 records.[32] Flooding across northern Illinois was widespread in the aftermath of the storms. Along the Rock River in Byron the river reached moderate flood stage on August 24; moderate stage is above 14 feet.[33] Officials in Ogle County recommended people in low lying areas along the Rock River, and Killbuck Creek near Lindenwood evacuate to higher ground.[32] Downstream, in Lee County at Dixon, the river had not reached flood stage as off August 25, though it continued to rise.[34]
Other rivers and streams in the Rock River valley experienced major to moderate flooding as well. The Kishwaukee River at Perryville crested at 17.57 feet, more than five feet above flood stage. The same river, in Belvidere, rose above flood stage on as well.[35] After 4.85 inches (123 mm) of rain on August 23 and 24 in DeKalb County, at DeKalb, the Kishwaukee rose to its highest level since 1983 and its second highest level in recorded history.[36] Numerous roads and bridges were closed and the cities of DeKalb and Sycamore declared local emergencies, though DeKalb County was not included in Blagojevich's initial disaster declaration.[36] In DeKalb and Sycamore about 600 residents were displaced from their homes and the DeKalb campus of Northern Illinois University was closed because of the flood.[37]
The Fox River at Dayton crested after it rose to more than 17 feet, over five feet above the river's flood stage.[38] At Starved Rock State Park parking lots were closed due to the level of the Illinois River which stood at 26.5 feet on August 25, 6.5 feet above its flood stage.[39] At Plano, Illinois the Fox rose up around the historic Farnsworth House, a modern architecture masterpiece designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Preservationists utilized a boat in an attempt to save the home and its furnishings, which were devastated by high water in 1996.[40]
